I was unhappy using just paint for the portrait of the farm, so I decided to mix the dirt with the acrylic medium. The painting then became not just about the earth but of the earth. This changed my relationship with the use of materials to create imagery. I also started using limestone, sand, vines, and other natural materials, creating textural three-dimensional landscapes emerging from their own organic origins as in Lost Prophet and Angel in a Field. The Iily paintings were inspired by the ice on the river flowing in front of my house, looking to me like water lilies.
Paintings shifted focus to a less obvious landscape that celebrates earth material as a voice unto itself.
